The debate began after Council Member Phil Mendelson, I-at large, offered an amendment - under the watchful eye of executives from the Marriott, Hyatt and Mayflower hotels who were present at the meeting - to replace the proposed hotel tax increase with funds from future city budget surpluses.[Apologies for the alliteration in the title. It won't happen again.]
Council Member Marion Barry, D-Ward 8, said he felt the proposal was unveiled too close to the vote and wanted to hold a public hearing on the issue. Council Member Vincent Gray, D-Ward 7, agreed, saying he needed time to create a greater consensus among council members.
Patterson, who said most of the concerns were well-vetted in hearings earlier this summer, said she would postpone the vote. A public hearing is scheduled for Oct. 25.
