McKinley Technology student found "responsible"

In an update to a story covered in October the sixteen year old student in question was found to be "responsible" for dropping a fire extinguisher from a second story balcony onto a teacher. The Post was given access to the hearing on the condition that the student's identity was not revealed.

The student looked up at D.C. Superior Court Judge Zoe Bush as she found him responsible for attempted murder, aggravated assault and possession of a prohibited weapon. The ruling could land the teenager in a juvenile detention center until he turns 21.

The youth was a student at McKinley Technology Senior High School in the 100 block of T Street NE when the incident took place Oct. 11. Authorities said that he dropped the extinguisher from a second-floor balcony and that the teacher has yet to fully recover.

Bush said the case presented by the prosecutor, D.C. Assistant Attorney General Bonnie Hannan, was overwhelming.

Several witnesses testified for the prosecution, including a student who said she saw the attack. A police detective, a teacher and an assistant principal testified that the student admitted his actions to them. A surveillance video played in court placed the student in the area of the school where the attack took place. In a video recording of a police interview, the student responded that he was "angry" when asked why he had thrown the extinguisher.

Most of my family works in education and we feel almost daily fear that something like this will happen. These types of violent outbreaks are on the rise and it is making it difficult for educators to feel safe at the workplace.
