Students pick official District fruit

Students of Bowen Elementary School in southwest are on a mission: feel the District needs an "official" fruit and they have just the candidate to fill that position: the cherry.
The D.C. government is taking the fruit-naming seriously. Council Chairman Linda Cropp introduced a resolution, called for Wednesday's public hearing and invited the executive branch and others to testify. A fruit can be chosen, Cropp said, for its abundance in the community, popularity or symbolic meaning.

"It is important for us to have students involved even at a very young age," she said, "and I look forward to guiding this resolution through the legislative process."
Cropp is encouraging the students to continue to lobby the other council members and ANC representatives before the resolution goes before the full council.
