Facilities modernization bill passes council

The funding bill that raises an additional $1 billion over ten years for DCPS facility upgrades has passed the DC Council by a vote of 13-0.
The council is requiring that D.C. Public Schools officials take a number of steps to make sure that surplus buildings are closed. They will also have to submit to regular audits to ensure that money for modernization is not wasted.

Officials hope to have some of those measures in place by May 15 when Superintendent Clifford Janey presents his facilities plan to the school board.

A final Council vote on the school modernization plan is expected March 7.
