Charter schools receive $2 million in federal grants

Nineteen DC charter schools have been honored by Mayor Williams, Councilwoman Patterson and US Senator Mary Landrieu (LA) for academic and enrollment achievements. The congressionally funded awards handed out nearly $2 million to the schools.

Is this pure windfall for the schools who received the awards or were they expecting it or trying to qualify for it?

That's a good question, and I'm not sure of the answer. I'm trying to dig around a bit to determine the federal legislation that authorized the awards. I suspect it may have come from one of DC appropriation bills from the last few years as I remember money being earmarked specifically for DC charter schools.

Maybe this was part of the sweetener for the voucher deal, the so called 3-sector solution.
