Gates foundation gives $4.8 million to DCPS

Thanks to the Bill and Melinda Gates foundation the District's public schools are the recipient of $4.8 million.
The grant will allow the city to expand programs for remedial math and reading programs, and it will help fund plans to reinvent some of the city's low-performing high schools as career academies.

"The partnership will allow us to really punctuate the importance of literacy for our secondary students," Superintendent Clifford B. Janey said Monday in Southeast Washington at Ballou Senior High School, one of 28 schools that will receive grant money. "This is a very ambitious project," he said.
