Belton update: guilty plea

Former Executive Director of D.C.'s Office of Charter School Oversight Brenda Belton is headed to the big house.
On Thursday, Belton pleaded guilty to four felony charges, including two counts of Theft from a Program Receiving Federal Funds and one count each of federal and D.C. tax evasion.

While the charges amount to 35 years in prison, Belton will likely only serve three years and will likely pay $383,000 in restitution.

Belton admitted submitting fake invoices to steal more than $200,000 in public funds between March 2003 and May 2006.

She also violated contracting rules and awarded seven no-bid school contracts worth $446,000 to her friends and in return, she received more than $180,000 in kickbacks.

Her schemes didn't stop at embezzlement and kickbacks, Belton also evaded nearly $100,000 in federal taxes between 2002 and 2005 and almost $30,000 in D.C.taxes in 2004 and 2005.

I think most charter school administrations are such frauds. P.S. I'm so glad you're updating again!
